About Alyssa

I am Alyssa R. Frederick (A.R.F.), PhD (she/they). I am a certified professional dog trainer dedicated to using force-free, humane, positive reinforcement methods in canine behavior modification. I have a PhD in Biological Sciences, with a focus on physiology, so I am well poised to interpret emerging behavior science. Through my work as a biologist and National Geographic Explorer, I’ve developed strong skills for working with a diversity of animals, in challenging environments, and with diverse teams. A perpetual student of biology and behavior, I am deeply dedicated to continuing education and am always learning new ways to help you and your dog. A.R.F. Behavior is based in Sonoma County, California, and services are available in the region in-person or worldwide virtually.

I also teach Kinderpuppy classes at the Humane Society of Sonoma County’s Academy of Dog! HSSC classes are excellent, affordable group options.

Methods

I want what’s best for you, your family, and your dog. That means using methods that are humane and effective in order to teach our dogs new skills, all while building stronger connections with our dogs .

I adhere to Dr. Susan Friedman’s Humane Hierarchy as well as Dr. Eddie Fernandez’s LIFE “Least Intrusive, Functionally Effective” model. This means we will address wellness (physical, emotional, nutritional health) needs, arrange the environment so that our dogs can succeed, and focus on what we want them to do. As advised by the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB), we will use positive rewards-based methods and never tools meant to cause discomfort or pain, like choke chains, slip leads, prong collars, e-collars, “corrections,” or other aversive tools. If you are using or have used these tools, and are interested in learning new techniques, I’m glad you’re here! I know you have concerns about your dog’s behavior and I want to empower you to address those concerns in ways that build trust and cooperation between you and your dog.

We will use a treat pouch, very likely a clicker, a long leash, and a well-fitted non-restrictive harness. Before we attempt any training, we will also work together to make sure that we are meeting your individual dog’s physical and emotional wellness needs. By giving our dogs agency and choice, access to natural behaviors, and incorporating games and predictability into our training, we will build behaviors as well as confidence with our dogs, while deepening a bond built on trust.

Values

At A.R.F. Behavior, we believe that Black Lives Matter, Trans Rights are Human Rights, and No One Is Illegal On Stolen Land. We aim to uphold values of anti-imperialism, anti-fascism, anti-racism, anti-ableism, environmental justice, immigrant justice, and LQBTQ+ justice. We will never discriminate on the basis of race, religion, ability, immigration status, sex, sexual preference, gender, or any other characteristic. You are welcome here. I hope you feel safe learning with me. To that end, I am happy to wear a well-fitted N95 or similar mask, or make other accommodations in order to make my services accessible.

Recommendations

Harnesses*:

Blue-9 Balance Harness

Ruffwear Flagline or Front Range

*The most important part of choosing a harness is finding one that fits well and does not restrict movement. While my favorite is the Balance harness, no harness fits every dog perfectly. I can help you find a good fit!

Long lines, drag lines, long line holders, collars, and utility belts are my favorite tools but you can’t go wrong with HTH gear.
